My Grandfather was born and raised in Brooklyn. His nephew, my cousin (and one of the precious few relatives on my Mothers side of my family that I still like) still has a little of that Northern accent. At this point, most Virginians probably have "Yankee" relatives, so I wouldn't get too offended when we throw the term around.
